Daren grew up in a Northern Ontario town in Canada called Kirkland Lake. His hockey career took him to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, New York. He studied Industrial Engineering. Daren stayed at RPI for two years, winning the NCAA Division 1 Championship in 1985. That year, the Buffalo Sabres drafted Daren Puppa and gave him a professional contract. Over the first few years of his professional career, Daren lived in Buffalo and Rochester. In 1986, he won the Calder Cup for the Rochester Americans. On March 4, 2016 Daren became a member of Rochester Americans Hall of Fame. After 7 and 1/2 years in Buffalo, he was traded to Toronto Maple Leafs. Though brief, Daren thoroughly enjoyed living downtown Toronto. In 1993, the new hockey team Tampa Bay Lightning made a trade for Daren. While playing for the Lightning he was MVP of the hockey team 3 times. I must have been 10 years old. Was it Christmas or my birthday? I remember they were black with white laces and the shiny silver blades gleaming. I was so happy, and they were also my first brand new skates. Before that, I wore my older brothers hand-me-down player skates. I started skating at 1 ½ years old. I grew up in Northern Canada, where it snowed from September to June some years. So skating was a second nature. Where there is snow, there is ice and lots of it. I started playing goalie at 3 years old, following my father’s footsteps, but still wearing player skates until age 10. I don’t recall it being a huge transition--nothing memorable. I don’t recall falling all the time or anything significant. Why am I telling you this? Because I decided to start skating again. I have goalie skates and have played with them, but they weren’t the best for skating the rink. Last week, I got player skates. They are black with white laces and the silver blades gleaming, just like my first pair of new goalie skates.  I headed to Wesley Chapel, Florida to the ice rink to see how they felt. Me being confident in my skating ability, as I should be, I stepped on the ice. Hands in my windbreaker pockets, I glided around the rink. I went round and round the rink, zig zagging around the 200 kids. It seemed like that many pushing their trainers, but maybe it was 100...probably 50. I was skating precisely--beautifully, one might say. Until I wasn’t. Hands still in my pockets, all 6’8” on skates went down. My only thoughts were *don’t smash your face,* *don’t smash your face*. Having played for so many years and never losing a tooth, I didn’t want to start now. My shoulder took the impact with my hands still in my jacket pockets. Embarrassment on my face, my cheeks red. Maybe I could blame it on the cold ice. Maybe no one noticed. Like a tree falling in in the forest...except I was not in a forest, I was on the ice. Player skate’s blades are rockered in shape. They are designed for the players to go fast. Goaltender skates are flat and smooth. Your mind and your focus are not there. The opening face-off is upon you. You’ve warmed up the same way, you went through your routines the same way, and you have eaten your regular pre-game meal. There is nothing different on this day. The prep work went great, and the game is about to start, but you can’t get your mind on board. The whistle is blown, the puck drops, and it's game time, except in your mind. What do you do? First, look for that first save to light the fire. That first save usually snaps you out. Savor what you did to stop it and force your mind to replay the save. If you are lucky, you will get a few more saves. It is a boost that you need to get you back into the game and find your direction. What if the first save isn’t a save? You didn’t stop the puck; it is a goal. Panic starts to set in. Thoughts start swirling through your mind. What if you have forgotten how to play the position? Everything feels off. This is when you need to take a deep breath and relax. Every practice, game, and situation has prepared you for this moment. Baby steps are what is needed. You need to settle down. You are good enough to handle the pressure. The past will lead your way. Sometimes, if you let the presence in, the zone will appear once again, and you can breathe a sigh of relief. But what if it doesn’t? This is when your talents, reflexes, and knowledge of the position take over. It will be a struggle, but this is where the hard work in practice takes over. You have stopped the puck before in practice hundreds of times. Be a little more aggressive, stay square to the puck, and focus on the puck, which you have saved so many times before. If you don’t have the zone on any given game, it doesn’t mean failure; it just tells you to work hard and lean on your conditioning and hard work. You do every time you step on the ice. The best goalies and athletes play well even when they are not in the zone. It was October 1976, and I was 11 years old. I was in Kirkland Lake, Ontario, Canada, and the weather was cold with snow on the ground, maybe 40 below. I walked uphill both ways from home to hockey practice and then back home, over a mile both ways. My kids try to dispel this truth, and my mom won’t back me up in this story, but I blame her age, and my kids weren’t there. But I did walk uphill both ways over a mile because this is Kirkland Lake and it's always cold, maybe, always 40 below. I was a hockey player, but most importantly, I was a goalie. I started skating at 1 ½ years old and put on the goalie pads at 3 years old. I loved hockey, and it was everything to me. My dad, Leo Puppa, was a goalie. He instilled the love of the game and, more importantly,y goaltending. My dad, on that fateful October day, came home with a present for me. I was excited at first, as most of my equipment was used and this was brand new. As I opened the gift, I was immediately struck by betrayal. My father bought me a brand-new hockey helmet. He said I had to wear it from now on. No discussions, and I was devastated. I had never worn a helmet before. I did wear a face mask that covered my face. Which I did wear with no problem, and appreciated as I got older, as I still have all my teeth. But an actual hockey helmet that covered my head, this was too much. My reasoning for my devastation is that I knew that the other kids on the hockey team would make fun of me. Goalies did not wear helmets. I was a tough goalie, and I was not going to wear a helmet either. And I was firm that I would never wear it. My father, Leo Puppa, never wore a helmet. He played goalie and even had a tryout with the Detroit Red Wings. They had another goalie at that time named Glenn Hall. They also only had one goalie on the team during that era. My dad did not wear a helmet then, and neither did Glenn. Why should I, and where did he get this idea from? He said it was for my safety.
